Florals in February.

Floral Maxi Dress: Kohl's.
Pink Blazer, Straw Fedora, Black Heels: Thrifted.
Cream Circle Scarf: Target.

Hello everyone!
So today I had to go to doctor to get a physical and I left the office feeling rather ticked off. My doctor handed me all of these pamphlets about loosing weight, eating right, exercising, and yada yada. She told me that I was borderline overweight for my height to weight ratio and that I was 'at risk.' When I tried to tell her that I was perfectly fine with my weight and my body and that I had finally come to an acceptance of myself, she told me- 'it's not about the emotions, it's about the facts.' See, doctors like this are the cause of girls starving themselves or developing anorexia. No matter how thin you are, they always want you to be thinner because supposedly thinner = healthier. It's unrealistically for me, a girl who is not even 5'3, to weigh much less than I do now. For me to be in the proper body mass index that I should be, I would have to be starving myself to get my weight down that much. How is that right...? Someone who is 5'7 can eat more and weight more because they're taller, but because I'm so short I'm expected to weigh much less or I'm 'overweight?' Not everyone is the same and has to fit into the stupid chart. Some 5'3 girls are naturally going to be thin and that's okay. Some, like myself, are going to be curvy and have fat on them and that's okay. I'm just tired of people telling me to loose weight and that being skinny means being healthy and happy. Someone who maybe fits into the right body mass index could be eating nothing all day and the doctor would say, ' oh yes! You're right where you should be.' When in reality, that girl is fueled by the doctor saying she is perfectly fine as she is when she's starving herself. It's not right.

I understand the importance of eating right and exercising to maintain a healthy lifestyle, but I just think doctors are so unrealistic to think that everyone has to fit into a certain category to be healthy. Healthy comes in many different shapes or sizes, but in the end that chart doesn't matter. I'd don't care what my doctor says. Emotions do override facts. Loving yourself is more important than the number of the scale.

With much love, Lauren.

All I can say is wow too. What makes a person healthy is their heart health, their lung health, and of course their sugar levels and all that stuff. Sometimes slowly gaining weight can big a warning to impeding diabetes, but as long as you eat healthfully and move around you're healthy. I have a friend who is considered "obese" but she is a marathon runner. So there you go. She is so healthy its nuts, but she just has meat on her bones.

It's so good that your happy with who you are! Most girls look at magazines and think that they are overweight because they aren't "perfect". Kudos to you! Your beautiful the way you are.

Oh good grief! Doctors and their 'facts' drive me nuts. You're beautiful just the way you are Lauren- Don't let anybody tell you otherwise.
While it is important to eat healthy, it's not something you want to obsess over...that IS the reason girls starve themselves.

Btw, love that dress :)

Wow, I can't believe that she told you that YOU were overweight!?! That is insane, did she not think that a comment like that would cause you to become obsessive about your weight!? Which is something that a doctor should be avoiding at all costs. The BMI calculation doesn't account for muscle mass, which can sometimes cause people to be "overweight" Health is not determined by your BMI!! So you keep on having an awesome body image, because so many girls our age are becoming anorexic. Thanks so much for sharing this :) it's nice to see that other girls feel the pressure too. xx

I love this dress. It's so beautiful on you. Pink looks so good on you.

I think your doctor was being a little rude. But I'm glad you stood up for yourself. You're beautiful and by no means over weight. Just be happy and comfortable with who you are!

I personally think you look great! I don't think you look overweight. Although if you go by a BMI, I'm overweight. Which I don't think is true. Body fat percentage is a more accurate "scale" ordinary scales just tell you how much you weigh, that includes water weight and organs and everything. BMIs don't take into account muscle (which weighs as much as fat!) So someone who weighs more than the BMI says is healthy, could still be very small and lean-but they have a lot of muscle! I assume you still live at home, I would ask your mom or dad to talk to the doctor. Perhaps you could take the body fat percentage test (They pinch a fold of fat-don't worry! It's not painful!) and get a REAL idea about how healthy you are. Perhaps you just need to fit more exercise into your day, which is beneficial even if you don't need to lose weight. You're beautiful just the way God made you!

You tell 'em Lauren! That is such an amazing attitude, I wish every girl in the world thought like that. I have to say it would be a problem if a person was obese, because then their health would be at risk. But so many young women today think that they should be skinny, because larger women aren't pretty. But luckily, women who do not look like sticks; like Adele or Katie Halchisick are showing girls that having curves is wonderful. We're women for crying out loud! We're supposed to have hips and boobs and a butt!

I also thought that this dress looked really familiar, then I realized that you had worn it before, but it was much shorter! Your so clever Lauren, seriously. And I am so glad florals are in for the spring!

Well, first off, you are are TINY.

And yes, I had the same thing this year at my physical. After bloodwork and everything, I end up with FANTASTIC health results, blood pressure, cholesteral(ohh, bad spelling day), sugar levels, everything comes up in the perfect health range. My doctor tells me this, then says, "But you're over weight and need to lose at least 20 pounds." I was so shocked and hurt. I've always been athletic, run and exercise on top of doing four different sports and have very carefully monitered my diet, and even when I was in the best shape of my life, I was only ten pounds lighter. I've never been stick thin, but I've always been super healthy. My weight just naturally settles where I am and for me to lose more and be what he definded as "Perfect weight" I would have to eat 500 calories a day and work out for 4 hours straight. That doesn't sound healthly.

I'm sorry, I've gone a written a book here, but it still hurts me, and I really understand what you say, and I admire you for being so strong. I had a terrible self image of myself as a teenager and always though I was fat, even as a size 4, so I really admire you for your strength Good job and way to speak out for other young ladies!

PS- you look totally adorbs, as usual. ^_^

Ugh, doctors like that drive me crazy and make me so mad. As long as you're eating right and getting exercise, you're on the right track and are healthy. It's about being *healthy*. Not about size and weight. Those are just numbers. Everyone's different and we're not all just going to be categorized into what weight we should be based on our height and gender.

You never cease to inspire me, Lauren. And you look amazing while doing it, too! ♥

Don't listen to her! You are perfectly fine! The thing about how people a certain height should weigh a certain amount, is bull. Because like you said, people all have different body types! I know girls my same height that weigh a lot more than me, or a lot less, and they all are healthy and normal. Some of us are thin, some are curvy. That is what makes life so beautiful, because beauty comes in so many shapes and sizes!! <3 Don't let her get you down, you are beautiful! :)

Wow. Talk about ridiculous! You are definitely healthy looking and slim to me in all your photos. I whinge constantly about the twisted ideas Western society has about beauty and bodies. If someone is very active and has a lot of muscle, they are going to weigh more on the BMI. My nutritionist in high school (I was a very active teen and really had to monitor my protein in takes, et cetera) told me to throw out the scale. It's all about how clothes fit not about weight or the size you wear. And thinner DOES NOT equal healthier. Skinnier people have higher chances of developing osteoporosis and being malnourished than someone who is a normal size or even five to ten pounds overweight. Women should be encouraged to love their bodies, not hate themselves because they are not size zero.

Pardon my language, but fuck 'em. You're gorgeous!

Those body mass index things are outdated and don't take into account the many different body types. If they want to use some sort of measurement other than weight then they need to measure body fat percentage. That's the only one that should be under a certain number no matter what your size and shape. That doctor is an ass. You're not overweight. You look great! Don't worry, the BMI things say people my height can be healthy and be like 30 pounds lighter than I am. In my book, that's crazy!
