Halloween 2015: DIY Statue of Liberty Costume!

You can take the girl out of New York City, but you can't take the New York City out of the girl!

When I think about what I want to turn myself into every year for Halloween, I always ask myself the questions, "what am I passionate about right now? What am I absolutely obsessed with?" Growing up I loved Barbie dolls so a DIY Barbie in a Box costume it was one year. Hey Arnold was my absolute favorite show growing up and I've felt as I get older I can relate to Helga Pataki more and more. So my freshman year of college I brought her to life in a quick DIY of a painted dress, a wig, and her precious Arnold locket. And then it's no secret to any of you that I have quite the obsession with coffee, so I decided why not take it to the next level? So I became a DIY starbucks cup complete with whipped cream on top!

Ever since getting back in August, all I can think about is New York. Every morning, every afternoon, every evening. So, I decided, why not just become New York City's most iconic, powerful lady for an evening? And so Statue of Liberty I decided to be for this Halloween!

It's a super easy costume and everything cost under $15 total to create. I went and bought a white sheet at my local Goodwill and dyed it this perfect turquoise color. There's actually no sewing involved in this dress; I just looked up a tutorial online on how to do a toga and pinned and knotted where need be. My belt is a long gold necklace actually and all my other jewelry and shoes previously thrifted items in my wardrobe.

My torch really lights up because it is a flashlight! I just bought a $1 one at the dollar store and painted it turquoise. I taped yellow, ripped up tissue paper around the edges to resemble a flame. It looks super cool when lit up & like a real torch! My book is just a thin one I had around my apartment and I taped some felt around the cover and added the little stick on stars just for aesthetics' sake.

The crown, which I was super nervous about, wasn't hard at all. I just cut out the pieces with construction paper, painted them, and then tapped everything together onto a plastic headband. So simple!

Hope you all enjoyed this year's Halloween costume! I'm so excited to wear it for a party tonight and then for Kent's Halloween tomorrow. Here comes Lady Lib! x

Hello there!

Not sure if it's the continual Halloween hoopla all around me this month or the lasting influence the city has had on my style, but I've been dressing particularly witchy as of late. A friend who has known me since freshman year and traveled with me to Florence commented the other day, "your style has really, really changed in the past year. It's surprised me." And it's surprised me, too, I think. For a long while I was really lost in between still dressing rather youthful and a more serious, simplistic style of dressing and it was bothersome. But, I'm glad I finally figured out the in between of the two that is my happy medium. I still like to incorporate little bits of girly flair here and there; case in point these adorable heart loafers! They were sent to me from Loly in the Sky, one of my favorite brands to work with. The company is amazing because they handmake the shoes down in Mexico (where they're based) from  vegan leather. Each one is special in its own way, and in the past year I've really been trying to support smaller, ethical companies and Loly fits the bill.

The rest of this outfit is very simple and all the pieces are thrifted (all the clothes but one Zara dress I've bought have been thrifted in the last few months!). Another way to be more ethical about clothing/fashion purchases is to use a subscription lending service where items are reused over and over again. I was given a three month subscription to Rocksbox which is a designer jewelry subscription box where stylists will pick you out three designer pieces a month and send them over to you! They're yours for as long as you'd like, and then when you'd like to be sent new pieces you send the first set back. I really like this because it helps cut down on unnecessary purchasing that we all do in seeking new items constantly to suit our changing needs. Instead of garnering a mass of excessive, cheap products that we dispose of after they fall apart or we wear tired of, I enjoy supporting the idea of investing in quality pieces and easily being able to change things up with a clear conscience not at the expense of human and environmental ethics. If you'd like to learn more about how Rocksbox works check it out here.

Hope you all are doing well! x

Fall in Photos.

Fall. Nearly everyone I knows favorite season. It's hard not to love it. Everything about it just seems to scream "comfort", "family", "warmth", and "delicious" (the treats, that is). Fall memories of me when I was a little girl stand out most to me amongst other snapshots inside my cluttered mind. I love to replay them every year and relive them as much as I can; doing the same traditions I did when I was 4, 8, 13, 18, and now 22. The magic never seems to dull as I grow older. And I hope it never does.

I really enjoy creating in this season, as well. It can be anything from photography, to outfits, to writing, to even food. Perhaps my inner time clock is ticking knowing that coming around the corner is winter, my least inspiring season where I tend to hibernate. So, inspiration is kicked into overdrive for one last hoorah. Or, maybe the changes I see all around me inspire inward changes in myself that propel forth creative energy. Creating is one of the things that keeps me sane. As an overthinker, to just quiet the noise by busying myself in producing something tangible, I release many a pent up frustration or worry I may have. Creating doesn't have to be for an audience. To simply produce for yourself opens up many doors for the mind and soul to become revitalized.

Anticipating that my inspiration steam engine continues to move forward at full speed as each day become shorter and the inky night comes sooner. When the steady rain falls I hear outside my second floor apartment window will become silent, breathless snowflakes that bury me beneath them...I hope I can still breathe a sigh of relief with the clicking of my laptop key; the scratching of my pen; the shutter of my camera; and the reverberations of thoughts in my mind.

Cozy and Comfy Fall Outfit.

Striped Shirt, Denim Shorts: Thrifted.
Oxfords, Cardigan: Forever21.

Forever living in the most fickle state ever where you mix a heavy knit cardigan with a pair of denim shorts in October! That's Ohio for you.

Halloween is coming up and right around the corner and I just finished up this year's costume! I get really serious about my costumes and try and out do myself every year.  Last year I was quite sad because I didn't get to dress up/celebrate Halloween while I was in Italy, so this year I'm going full force. I love making and DIYing my own costumes every year. It adds a personal, creative touch to set you apart from others who still may be dressed as the same thing/person you are.

I was super honored that Seventeen posted my DIY Starbucks costume on their website! That has been one of my all time favorites I've done and it meant so much that they liked it/wrote about it.

Hope you all are doing well! I have a photo shoot I'm styling for tomorrow for the campus run fashion magazine, a full day of working at the coffee shop, and then a few Halloween parties to attend this weekend. It's going to be a busy but good one! x

With much love, Lauren.
